Stop f*cking calling me minority or part of a underrepresented group. Yeah I noticed I am one of the only women on a conference. I DONT CARE, I AM A PROGRAMMER NOT A SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE. Hire me for my work, not because you want you company to be more diverse.50

Potential Employer: So your website does not seem to work well in Internet Explorer. A lot of employers might get annoyed with it.
Me: Yeah, I don't want them to hire me or even send me a message.2 -
My LinkedIn profile bio:
... however I’m not interested in hybrid mobile or contract work.
My LinkedIn “notes to recruiters”:
... I’m not interested in hybrid mobile or contract work.
My preferences:
- ticked full time permanent
- listed native technologies in the tag selector.
Email this morning:
Hi are you interested in the below role:
Role: Hybrid mobile developer
Salary: xxxxx
Type: 6 - 12 month contract.
No I am not you fucking fucktard. Read my fucking profile or go fuck yourself with a fucking cactus!8 -
Drinking game: Take a shot whenever you’re staring at work and don’t feel like working.
Bonus game: try not to die or get fired.18 -

It's:
"oh cool. you must have good job perspectives."
Or:
"you just use a computer. that's not real work. do a job where you use your muscles. lazy student."
And the best:
"Can you gift me with computer parts for free" or "can you copy program XY for me? It cost to much."13 -
I wanted to go on a cruise with my programmer boyfriend.
His response?
"I can't be away from work that long."
Not because he'll get into trouble or anything. Oh no. He just loves writing code *that* much. 🙄5 -
>Wife texts me to buy her 10 oranges on the way home from work
>Arrive home with 2 oranges thanks to working with binary..
Believe it or not this actually happened after I had just finished a whole binary-related project over the span of around a month.6 -
I think I’m a bit unusual in that my favorite place to code is on the couch, just using my laptop. During the work day I use two monitors, but I find it more comfortable to just use a lap desk and laptop when I get home/on weekends. I’m not sure if it’s from laziness or whatever, but it seems to work.7

You all, something is wrong. No one has pissed me off at work recently (other than boss, but he does that by existing). I'm not sure if they've all learned, or if shit is about to hit the fan.10

GUI user: "How can you work from such a basic text interface like that terminal?"
Me: "How can you work with all those stupid buttons that more often than not can't do jack shit?"
Being a Powerline user, I do think that design matters a lot. But so does usability (I don't want my programs to take half a minute to load their bloated UI's) and the ability to use every feature that this or that piece of software has in its command line arguments but not necessarily as a GUI option.9 -
Startup: let's improve on our MVP and build an actual website app.
Me: ok.
[go through 2 weeks discovery and planning stage]
Manager1: love working with you. You explain and work in a really professional manner.
[MVP gets built in 2 months, I'm the only dev designer devops throughout]
Manger1: Omg love it! Wait till the other manager sees it. I knew you were right person for the job.
Other users: oo cool. I love features x, y, z.
[two days later shows to Manager2]
Manager2: x doesn't work, feature you is not useful and doesn't work... Hate it. I think we'll move you to another project.
Me: (woah that escalated quickly meme plays in my mind)
Me: [explaining MVP, lean methodology, your internal decision making processes]
...
Manager2: Yeh we want you to not work on any development work (even though those are your skills and extensive knowledge etc) we need you to do admin tasks (that have nothing to do with product or coding etc)
Manager1 and employees: 😲 wtf
Me: I quit
- - -
Now they are struggling in every way possible and don't have enough funds to hire another person close to what they need to help them.4 -
My biggest personal challenges as a dev are these two:
1. I tend to work too much (by choice), which impacts my personal spare time heavily.
2. I tend to not let loose of a problem until it is solved. This often results in longer work hours or me not taking brakes...4 -
In the darkest of days, I discovered how to remote login to my computer at work through the company vpn. I then proceeded to work overtime at night in secret for a week or so, writing documentation and refactoring code.
I finally woke the fuck up and realized that I shouldn't be obsessing over proprietary codebases that do not belong to me, and I should put this misguided energy into my own projects.
So yeah, as a bad dev habit I'm working on fixing, this fits the bill.4 -
We are forced to work from home until further notice . i am hating every second of it. Being home and not gaming or binging on anime / netflix feels like a punishment. im more productive in the office.15
-
When your product manager is too nagger and don't let you work with his questions if you finished the tasks or not.. this what happen to the product.3
-
Sure. Just unplug my ethernet cable without asking. Not like I'm trying to work or anything, right?1
-
$work: Ey @Root, make this super simple thing.
$work: No, not like that.
$work: It also needs to do A, B, and C.
$work: No, not there. You should build it somewhere else, but I won't tell you where.
$work: You need to build out F and G, too.
$work: What do you mean you don't have the data? Just ask support drone #3. (who directs me to #2, and that one to #8 who doesn't know, and that one to #12 who won't answer)
$work: Why can't I do K, Y, or S? You should be able to infer these from the mind of whoever wrote the ticket by its wording, despite no mention of them whatsoever.
$work: Are you done yet? It's a super simple ask!7 -
I reached a point where I'll be happily working as the kid who serves coffee and tea to random strangers and not work at a company, as a freelancer OR WITH FUCKING HUMANS!
I'm out !!15 -
Never again will I fucking work for anyone close to me! It's not fucking worth helping them.
Backstory is too long. Lets just say that they fucking expect too much as we're friends. Assuming that paying 10$ for your domain every year entitles me to work on every ducking detail of your website. Not to forget I gave this person an insane discount on the entire project.
I lost a friend or someone who I assumed was a friend15 -
Everyday single day I have to give time for family, personal work and office. Prioritized in that order.
End result : low quality family time, pending personal projects. Office work - well that one is OK I guess cos the time is dedicated.
Solution : made a deal with wife - one day on weekend dedicated for family (she can plan anything she wants) and I will not do any work. Other day dedicated for my personal work/time (no family plans).
Divide weekdays similarly. On family days I checkout at sharp 4pm from office and come home straight spend the rest of the day with family alone. On the other days I stay either at office or go somewhere to work or hangout with dev buddies.
*Wife agrees*
End result: Quality family time. No interruption when coding (a dev would understand the importance of this). More productive work.6 -
Decided I'm going to tell my boss I'm no longer going to do wordpress.
It all started innocently, like helping someone find an option or something, but now I have to write plugins...
Not part of the deal.
I've also got 0 motivation to go to work since starting this shitty project. I used to want to go to work and looked forward to helping out, but this is just soul numbing.
Let's see how that goes (either tomorrow or Wednesday).
I'll let you guys know if I get fired :p14 -
My instincts are telling me that i should resign from this company asap.
My team lead knows a to z of the project and he is the all rounder guy here. If my team lead leaves, I could be the one replacing him. But i don't want to accept this kind of responsibility.
My life goal is to not get sucked into the 9 to 5 life or work in this kind of environment.
The only pro i find is that i now have few more cool friends.
But I'd rather be be my own boss and work 24/7.
I now feel like living a lie going to work everyday..8 -
I bought myself a small summer gift 😍
This may or may not encourage me to work more at home this summer.23 -
It has officially been piss on my chips day.
1 bus pass refused to work today.
2 my pixel decided it would die. Will not boot or charge.
3 go on lunch and get battered by hailstone.
4 work pc decided it wants to blue screen whilst updating.7 -
So I just found out that my colleague who I often have to work with does not use a debugger to troubleshoot any bugs at all. Actually, he does not even run or test his code locally either with prints or something similar. He just commits java code directly on bitbucket, no source control, without making sure it compiles and then he runs a CI provided by devops that takes 4 freaking hours to run because he bloated that shit up somehow.
I suggested politely to help him find a more efficient approach and to use my hardware setups for speeding up his work because I assume it must be pretty painful to work with, but he just refused.
That and those "seniors" with 10 years Linux development XP in the embedded field who don't know basic commands like ls, cat and touch and code in notepad.
Fucking me, who the hell am I working with and can someone please end me?6 -
Just curious, how is it like to work as a developer. I mean, as a profession and not a hobby or freelancing.
From devRant, so far I know that you work in an office, the managers and bosses are assholes, and people always write unmanageable and undocumented code.
What else is it like? Do you get to work alone or do you have to work with people? Do you stay there all day long?
I know its still going to be a while for me, but I want to know how it will be like.24 -
At work,
If I'm not coding, I can't wait for lunch or too leave.
If I am, time becomes irrelevant me
It's 4pm now... Just finished coding... Time to take a lunch break...
Anyone else do this?5 -
That feel when you’re asked to share work you’re proud of and you’re not proud of anything.
Or rather, you are... but they’re programs written in C/C++ and you’re interviewing for a mostly frontend gig in React.11 -
If you want to talk about politics or religion at work, then you can expect a lot of disinterested nods and “sure”s from me before I leave the room.
I don’t care about your invisible man in the sky, I am here to do work. In fact, your invisible man in the sky can choke on my dick for all I care.
I don’t want to talk about to political cult. I’m here to work. Keep your sheep mentality to yourself.
I’m here to build fucking software, not to take on your insecurities and character flaws.4 -
I've been working on implementing a fairly large feature on a project at work--
**Sorry. I should rephrase that**
I've been *trying* to work on implementing a fairly large feature on a project at work.
It's slightly complicated because I'm not as "in the know" with the project as I should be. I get tossed around projects a lot as the only designer+developer so I've got my hands in a lot of buckets... Or git repos I should say... My source tree has a lot of tabs open and each project is run by someone with their own ideologies on how stuff should be done and laid out and what not. Basically jumping between these projects leaves you mildly capable on all of them but not amazing at any of individual one them--
--I digress.
There's a bug I've been trying to fix.
--Stupid simple bug, literally just a casting issue or something but there's so much data in this one object that it's taking a few solid minutes of concentration to figure out which variable is busting it all up. It shouldn't take long to fix...
But it has. It has taken 4 days.
FOUR. DAYS.
...To fix what is basically a null reference exception.
Every time I sit down to work on this bug real quick I get pulled away to do a wireframe or change a flow chart or diagram or colour or print styling.
Every. God. Damn. Time.
4 days. Soon to be 5.
My commits are real low at this point guys.
Please boss man, just let me code...4 -
I fucking hate it, when I have to stop working on my project, not because I am incompetent, but because somebody fucked up the docs or their fucking API doesn't work3
-
When I read the rants here it's like people don't love their work or would rather not make their children be a developer someday.
Where's the Care Bears when you need them.
Come back to semi-darkness. Dev is fun!12 -
How clients tend to not understand how much work developing a "simple" or "small" feature can be.
Hey add live chat, that's easy right?2 -
Should a developer really have to be a jack of all trades? I write code, but at work I feel like I am always getting pulled into sysadmin debacles. I am not a sysadmin or an ops person. I am a developer, not a systems guy.
If you want me to be a systems guy, then train me to be one. You hired me to write code, not to troubleshoot shitty IBM Application Servers.8 -
We have a 45year old junior that is left to his own devices. He simultaneously wants help all the time and won't listen to the answers. He also wants help but doesn't want to redo things he's fucked. He wants to finish tasks but not write tests in case it shows problems and he has to do more work.
The worst thing is he wants to get work done but cba to learn the framework, language, tools he's using, or just the feature of the framework he is literally using for his task. He just fumbles about like a blind man in a strip joint until things 'work'.6 -
Last year my goals were two:
- work less
- earn more
and I only achieved the second one.
Based on that, my new resolutions are:
- sleep more
- do not work more
- earn more or equal
- to gain stability
- more efficient workouts7 -
Many people were hired to work on new product, but no one have told them that for one or two quarters they will have to maintain 20 years old project. I was ranting about this, but in the end accepted my fate, wiped tears with money and moved on. However one of devs took another path. When he was asked to work with .aspx and jquery 1.X instead of react, he just said : "Not going to happen" and left the building.5

The sad day has come people... Anyone who knows me; knows that python and PHP are not my favourite of things...
But I've decided to try and work towards getting a Dev position at my current work place... That required PHP and python knowledge
Gonna be honest, better pay but have to use PHP and python or kill myself is a very tough choice...18 -
So did any of you guys use bulma as work or side project? I tried it and I find that it’s documentation isn’t as good as bootstrap or semantic ui, there’s some stuff that’s not stated there and I have to find out myself.10
-
I NEED MY SLEEP FFS!!! It is 06:20 in the morning and I am already on the train to work because one of our managers felt the need to plan a meeting from 08:00 on monday morning to explain EXACTLY why something does not work.
Needless to say that she is no dev (or has technical know how)!
But the best part is:
THE INVITATION FOR THE MEETING WAS SEND OUT FRIDAY EVENING SO THERE IS NO PREPARATION-TIME WHATSOEVER!!!
Fuck5 -
One shitty thing about working in a Japanese company is that they make you write personal goals/targets (目標). These goals they expect you to achieve don't actually relate to your work most of the time and it's not about personal growth, but more about what you did to improve the company.
Another thing is their expectations that you can achieve all this within a year on top of your work is kind of unrealistic. Plus even if you achieve such goals, it does not equate to good performance review and/or salary increases.8 -
Sometimes, while coding, I get distracted by a tiny voice telling me: "Stop that! You're at work!"
But then I think: "Well, coding IS work."
To which the tiny voice replies: "Yes, but it's not YOUR work."
Damn you, tiny voice, I hate when you are right.
My current career(completely unrelated to programming or even CS) is probably my greatest distraction... and I hate that. =P2 -
Hired a friend who is kindoff a spoiled brat. If me or the rest of the team tell him anything he answers with the team does not know enough to tell him what to do. The slightest words (why is it not done yer etc. seem to trigger his ego and threaten to resign). His skills are also not what i thought they were , they get the job done but thats pretty much it. Should i work to placate his ego or let him resign.10

Trying to decide how to spend my weekend, continue to learn node.js and angular.js OR learn vim OR work on side project...to many choices not enough time7

I'm out of my mind bored. I'm an unemployed person with a great job. You'd think this would be awesome. It's torture.
I work for a consulting company. I get paid whether or not they have work for me. They haven't for several months. I'm not hearing anything. I don't know when it will change.
I'm a skilled developer in a few very popular languages - nothing remotely in the ballpark of old or obsolete. I hear that's in demand. I spend most of my time answering questions on Stack Overflow. I really like to help people, but it boggles my mind that the people struggling with the stuff I help them with all have actual work to do and I don't.
I like to learn about new stuff, but I'm just not interested in learning another framework or anything else to add to the giant pile of stuff I'm already not using. It's not fun anymore.
I don't want to do another side project, either. I have a job as a software developer. That should, at some point, involve developing some software.
This is sucking the life out of me. It's harder and harder to get out of bed and come to work. I've held off looking for another job because I'm hoping this will change. The people here are great. I could go somewhere else and it could suck for completely different reasons.
Ironically, this is close to the reason why I left my last job. Ten years ago I went through a spell where I just gave up and stopped coming to work for over a month. No one noticed. Other people were stressed about getting laid off. Some of them were. Not me.
Am I part of some weird experiment to see how insane someone can go in this totally screwed-up circumstance? Are people following me around with cameras?
I'd love to find something else, but by all outward appearances I had already found an awesome place to work. There's only one thing missing - the work.
Thanks for listening. I'm just going to put my head on my desk for a while and despair. What is wrong with this industry? We're a mess on so many levels.12 -
Depending on the company you get to work for you have 2 choices in Lithuania.
Either you're the outsourced developer (The pay is amazing, many benefits etc...)
Or you work in a company that is not multi-international, then either the pay is much lower, or they expect a lot and push you to the curb with tasks.4 -
Reminding myself: No matter how stupid the work is or how a coworker is acting like an ass, it does not matter. I'm here for the salary and I have other things to do out of work.5
-
Hi devs, newbie here and i want to tell you my story for introduce myself.
I work for a company that develop web-app for managing taxes and sell it to locals cities.
We develop this web-app in Rails framewok and i litterally learned and work with this company from 2 years.
But i'm not happy at all. I was always hated and blamed for my work. My boss always take impossible deadlines and pretend ti finish the work in time, even if i had to overstay at work, even at home, even saturday. I'm not a really smart guy, so i often do dumb errors and I really suffer the nervous burnout and stress. Now i want to change work and i'm search far away from home but still in Italy, like Milan i.e. but i'm still confused. What i should do? I'm the problem?
PS. I want to thanks all of you that with your post get me laugh, inspired me and make me feel part or a great group.
Sorry for my base english6 -
Several actually
- root DB access on production
- git commit -am "Stuff" (message)
- Not doing backups
- Using personal licensed software for company work
- 1 commit per day or weekend
- Taking work to home1 -
In my three years experience so far I can honestly say that 100% of the developers I've worked with are narrow sighted with regards to how they develop.
As in, they lack the capacity to anticipate multiple scenarios.
They code with one unique scenario in mind and their work ends up not passing tests or generates bugs in production.
Not to say I'm the best at foreseeing every possible scenario, but I at least TRY to anticipate and test my code as much as possible to identify problems and edge cases.
I usually take much more time to complete tasks than my colleagues, but my work usually passes tests and comes back bug free. Whereas my colleagues get applauded for completing tasks quickly but end up spending lots of time fixing up after themselves when tests fail or bugs appear.
Probably more time wasted than if they had done the job correctly from the start. Yet they're considered to be effecient devs because they work "fast".
Frustrating...7 -
switched from windows 10 to kubuntu 18.10 (yes it's not arch or gentoo) last week, after the previous system crashed and burned
I had no idea, my laptop can be so fast and work almost entirely without a fan. Live is beautiful again!1 -
First day as logistic administrator and already in need of this ribbon in excel... (was not included as a skill needed or to be known.) Let's do some after work VBA I guess.5
-
I just want to make it clear for all the PMs out there...
If you don't put it in a fucking ticket, or don't mention a feature you want in a ticket, I will not do the work or forget put something into a feature.
Write that bitch up if you want it done.2 -
Quitting nicotine starting tomorrow.
Anyone have any tips or advice to expedite the withdrawal process?
I have already decided I'm going to start going for morning runs and take probably 3 hot showers a day.
My biggest fear is that I'll get insomnia and I will not be able to keep up with my school work due to fatigue17 -
Not dev, but IT...
Just found out that one section of my place of work still uses floppy disks. No I’m not fucking kidding. The other sad part? We still have the outdated computers to read them. 😩😂
Please, send help or a job application...5 -
When college professors want students to do college portal's works.
ACCEPT THE FUCKING WORK.
DO NOT CHANGE THE INITIAL REQUIREMENT WHILE I'M WORKING ON IT.
DO NOT CHANGE MY WORK WITHOUT ASKING ME OR AT THE LEAST NOTIFYING ME.
YOUR PORTAL LOOK HORRIBLE NOW WITH SHIT TIER MENU WHICH I SUGGESTED IN THE FIRST PLACE THAT IT WOULD LOOK GOOD THIS WAY. AND NOW YOU'VE MADE IT LOOK SO BAD MY EYES HAVE CANCER.1 -
When I worked in a non-dev env, the best part was that I was done with work after working hours. I didn't stress out or even think about the issues. It was something for tomorrow or someone else to worry about. And so, I was not mentally exhausted and stressed out all the damn time.
So, I shall try to bring that mentality to my dev life too. With this new position I'm starting soon, I really want to do well for at least a few years. And that would need me to chill the fuck out. Particularly after work.5 -
Not being motivated enough to work on or finish personal projects.
Apparently, easier said, than done when you have a full-time Dev job.1 -
Point out everyone else's bullshit. Some people will tell you you are mean or you lack soft skills or that they can no longer work with you and you should go to see a therapist, but oh well, you are an engineer not their mom. You are just being rational.5
-
Starting the week with a 3 hour meeting to discuss importing Customer data to a new crm, if I should be allowed to take the time to do it or not.
I finished it last week and already imported the data to the syst enviroment and scrubbed it.
I spend more time Waiting for meetings and attending than doing the work.1 -
Wondering how many of you have ADD/ADHD, diagnosed or not. I've heard people say that many programmers have ADD or ADHD and that it generally makes them a better programmer. I myself have ADD and I feel like it makes me a better programmer, but I have to work harder at paying attention to my wife/social life.24
-
So I'm an intern at a small company for a duration of 2 months. Not a lot of work is allotted to me right now. Every evening I have this weird feeling when I have to leave, cuz practically based on the work I could have left after lunch but I've got to stay here and wait till enough people or just someone leaves to make it seem okay.10
-
I not sure what is worst, an arrogant client full of demands or anti professional collegues who don't respect you and try to subvert your work
-
Just a little poll for you guys :)
Do you comment your code during the development or when it's done?
Do you keep track of the documentation during the development or after?
Do you use Git only for source control or also to work from multiple places and keep the code up to date?
Do you sh*tcode on purpose (or don't make any effort to clean it) when it's not for yourself, or not for something you value much?
If you have any other strange habit, feel free to mention it :)16 -
1. Plan your work
2. Plan new skills to learn every year
3. Stackoverflow is your best friend
4. Don't be afraid to ask stupid questions...
5. ... but make sure not to ask too many of them
6. Don't get burned on one single topic, find other projects to work in parallel or even better work on side projects in your spare time -
I need someone to make me a list of things I am not allowed to say and who I’m not allowed to say them to at work. This is getting ridiculous. Every time I turn around someone is making this face at me 😬 and saying “Don’t say that to that team” or “Don’t say that to this person”. I can’t do my work right if I have to keep censoring myself on everything people find organizationally sensitive.19

Used to not work for Google /Android, but since the entire Android community uses about everything he makes, and then everything he touches turns into gold and becomes part of the Android SDK sooner or later, because his work is so useful and good. He now works for Google / Android. He's one of the Android gods, a true rockstar dev!2 -
Family support? What's that?
I have a complicated relationship with the rest of the fam, so I have been avoiding talking to them for a few years now, and it's not like they've been dying to contact me either. Except for mom, who would sometimes give useful insight. The rest, no support, work-wise or not.4 -
I quit…. I have gone to start a farm. Farming is straightforward for the most times I will know why my crops are dying and intervene quickly. With systems they will die or people will break them. The system usually decides wen to work and wen not to work. Resolve issues by themselves after days..3

that weird anxious feeling you get when trying to work out if this is a good idea or not.
"There was a problem downloading the required files"
OK, well that lasted long.
MS cant even have their installer finish anymore.random edgium? lets enjoy broken software installers fail microsoft lets try something new edge chromium8 -
Kay! Why people think remote job is less then a onsite job? Excuse me? I also work remotely. Okay I get it that onsite you have to go onsite through bus or blah blah , but your hours are not counting by a tracker and not getting SS every 2 min. My family doesn't understand that I have to be on my laptop for at least 7-8 hours.
Their reaction is :" why the food is not ready?"
" I am doing work"
"So what? You are home!"
And WHY LARAVEL COMPOSER UPDATE IS SO DAMN SLOW9 -
aight boys i'm doing it
i'm switching to Linux full-time
no i'm not using arch or arch-based, i lost my arch bootdisk and i'm not spending another 100hrs on making it work again16 -
If this was userRant most of the rants would be about difficulties with the app itself.
People say: of course I'm having issues, in not used to it.
I used to help people to use android or iphone even before I had one.
Its not about being used to something. Its about putting your brain to work... some people just can't ...6 -
That I'm Not working on my personal projects after university or work and beeing to lazy to even start learning a new language.

Today's task - trying to work out if the guy who set up his repository using "mane" as the main branch name genuinely can't spell, just likes horses, or is just trying to push back against the recent trend of not using "master" 😂14

One of the devs didn't show up to stand yesterday, remote or in person. Turns out he was in the hospital for seizures.
They asked me this morning to work Sunday and I said no. It's not worth the money and I'd rather have the weekend. I don't need to be prone to seizures to know that this level of work is deeply unhealthy.1 -
@dfox I recently started playing around with Neo4j and find it really fun to work with. Would there be any way to get hold of parts of the devRant graph/graphs? Not private or secret stuff of course - only public parts of rants, tags and users. It would be fun to to play around with and analyze.13
-
Do you guys ever feel like you lose the ability to be objective about your own work. I've looked at my website for so long now, I don't know if I think it's good or not...5

WhaT DO you DO oUTsiDE oF wORK? tell ME SOmETHiNg INtereStInG, PreFerABLY noT RelaTED To yOUR joB Or iNdUStry.
You think I have "time" outside of work? I fucking huff copium like every other fucking wageslave, and we ain't fucking friends so I'm not going to divulge the exact types and flavors of choice for me to be judged.
I don't have the time, money or energy to fucking have some respectable instagrammable hobbies for your stupid like about wanting well rounded people.
We both know all you need from me is to not be an asshole.
At a certain point it feels like the industry is going to compete with girls for shit-testing people except we have whiteboarding leetcode as well.7 -
Will be offline for few days.
If you see me like/comment to your post or post any rant until next month, please mention me there with "gitlog do your work or you'll not make it"5 -
Are my rants supposed to be well documented, too? Or like submitted as if it’s a GitHub issue, where I shall add details such as what’s not working, how do you expect it to work, steps to replicate the bug, screenshots?
Why tf am I even overthinking this?! Lmao8 -
PM ask for explanation of why something doesnt work as expected due to browser incompability etc. And when developer starts to explain, PM don't have time or not interested in listening.4

Not really trying to, but probably should try to fix this bad, bad habit…
I keep wanting to fix and improve everything - and I keep taking notes, writing action plans et fucking cetera to the point the amount of work that should be done and I want to do is driving me insane. And they should all get done now!
In short, I should really either learn to focus on just one thing at a time for a meaningful period - or just cease to give a fuck. Either could work.2 -
Only one goal : earn more money.
- Not to work for friendship, equity, kindness, craziness, etc. Code more for sole purpose to earn more
- Accept more projects whether I can develop or not to earn more
- Learn to manage and work with freelancers and agencies to earn more
- Work for anyone and any type of project suitable for my knowledge as long as the offer is good to earn more
Etc. You got the gist.
My language for 2020 is money :3
(well I'm trying to, anyway)1 -
fucking kidding me? go to google or facebook's offical documentation, they are carfted perfectly not to work4

love helping users that can describe their problem and then we have the "other" side of users, the life sucking golems of collective stupidity.
You get "software does not work!" and asks for error message or description of what doesn't work and get same response "it does not work".
After a few rounds in the "what is wrong support circle" it ends with user has changed PC to one were the software is not installed...
"it does not work" no effing shit sherlock you want me to install some IQ with it?2 -
To date this is the most useful thing I’ve seen that appears to work whether it does or not I may never know
https://tinyurl.com/6zwn7hb3
What projects has everyone here seen that could be anything from proof of concepts or working applications and libraries that are actually USEFUL/FUNCTIONING not just CONCEPTUALLY useful in ML
Because none of the object classifiers I have seen look useful Half the time they miss things or get things wrong
However this project snakeAi I saw is a self training ml that plays snake until it can’t possibly do better and it works
The link above appears to work and be useful but I betcha it fails on backgrounds that aren’t so solid !
What else have you peoples seen ?

Management: "Let's hire some folks and expand the team in this region. And then we will think about what they will exactly do. And then get more work or create more work with our own vision"
Hired developers *mind*: "Why the fuck is this small work done by such a big team? Why the fuck is this work done by a my team (different team) and not by the same team that built the product? Oh, they don't have bandwidth? They want to parallelize? And all decisions still have to go through the product team? They have months of experience and context? Right"2 -

Reasons to dislike our work VPN when working remotely: Forces all traffic to be routed through it, not only the important internal stuff.
For some reason, I just dislike having everything I do potentially recorded and/or at least slowed down.13 -
Got this in Slack from the owner of the firm I work for...
I mean, you already pay me half of the average salary I should be making, but yeah, let me get right on that...
To be fair, I work with this guy because he is a really good guy to work for, is very hands-off (no micro-managing), doesn't expect me to work on the clock or any overtime and lets me make all the calls with our directions in development. Plus he pays me all he can afford, so it's not like he's trying to screw me (he shares the books with me to prove it).
But still, the dude has to realize you get what you pay for. You don't go to McDonalds if you want a gourmet burger...2 -
During Summer I'm tired because it's too hot.
Now it's getting cold, it's getting harder to get out of bed...
And the heater makes me tired too...
Plus there's the not going out or, moving as much... Which may also be due to being tired.
And well in general, I seem to not feel like doing anything lately... Because I'm tired....
Seems like my routine is consolidating to: sleep, eat, work...
And if I had a choice it would just be sleep...
I need to get out of bed now so can eat and go work..... But I don't wanna.....
Is it just me? Any tips to break the cycle?18 -
So what's up with bosses and employees that sporadically ask you to respond fast (like in the hour) to any request even though it is not an emergency? I feel like 50% of the people I work with are constantly in fireman mode, but never stop to think why they work like this.
When it comes to implementing helpful processes or improving shitty processes, I always get the "we don't have time, we are overbooked for this quarter." We never have time to improve and it fucking sucks.
Also, stop bothering me at 9-10 PM or during the weekends you bunch of no-lives. Maybe work smarter and less often?
It honestly makes me less motivated to work and depresses me a bit. I'm starting to hate my job.2 -
Panic. 😟
I received two emails today inviting me for video call interviews at two companies I applied to.
I am supposed to select a date for this week or next week, but our office resumes work on Monday, the 7th.
I only have tomorrow and the day after (3rd and 4th) left for this week. I need time to prepare, so I am thinking of booking one for 4th and one for next week.
BUT
I am trying not to start the year by skipping work. I already skipped work in December because of a brief illness (lol).
I am thinking, if I go to work on that day, I might get summoned into a meeting and miss my interview. So, I have concluded that I will have to skip work on that day, but now I can't think of excuses.
Ideas? 🤔12 -
Guess it's time to ditch ProtonMail as well.
Translation: "[Update Google play services.] ProtonMail won't work until you have updated Google Play Services."
I know I'm almost an anti-Google nazi at this point, but ProtonMail was one of the only remaining apps not needing Google to work, and now it's a "sin equa non" condition. I'm very disappointed. Guess I'll have to switch this address to Tutanota or host my own email server.
Edit: why the fuck would my autocorrect capitalize nazi?13 -
Using JavaScript... (we combine JS and c++ and I love c++ ... definitely not JS)
It is such a mess to maintain and work with and I never had any propensity or interest towards web development.. especially JS10 -
@allBeginners:
It's not about which language to pick or which problem to solve. It starts with thinking like a programmer.
I think that this guy educates quite well: https://youtu.be/azcrPFhaY9k
TLDW: Write your problem in English first and then translate that into simple code, not the other way around. If it does not work, you told the wrong things to the computer; its not the computer failing.4 -
My weakest skill is simply organization. I can produce great work in a decent timeframe, just maybe not for the project or task I should be working on, assuming I don't get distracted by that email I was supposed to follow up on yesterday.2
-
Anyone else feels forced into a position by your project leader to be responsible for another coworker's work?
I feel like it is a burden of an ship anchor. They expect me to explain when she does not do her job correctly or uses too much time on X task.3 -
I've always wanted to post a rant here whenever I get pissed about something at work mostly because of the management and the people I work with. It rarely happenes but if I encounter one, I start to post something and end up changing my mind about not posting it because I'm afraid I am not the only devranter on our team or even other teams that I work with and they might figure out that it was me ranting because of the details I include in the rant. So I try to calm down instead and try to find a way to handle the situation.
Damn I'm never getting my free stress ball here6 -
I hate it that some people at work call directly to my phone when they need help. They think that this way they will get service faster.
Now I understand if it’s an emergency but 95% of the cases it’s not. I most likely am stuck in a meeting or got my hands full with other work, so I am unable to answer my phone.
For gods sake, send a ticket, email or an instant message so my coworkers will be able to see your issue or I can forward it to availabe person. Stop spamming me with phone calls when I can’t answer!3 -
my work drives me crazy sometimes, our production tables dont have primary keys or indexes. There are several tables who are basically the same, most scripts/reports are hacked together with no common agreement on dates/values and as a result, it is almost impossible to check whether values are correct or not.4

What's the most difficult english word to spell in your opinion?
Mine is "length". Keep forgetting if it's "th" or "ht" (but if you start to think about it is obvious).
And I bet not only mine since iit's written "lenght" in the production database at the company where I work ...14 -

Why do people think that I'm a computer technician? I'm not here to fix your WiFi or make your system faster. Leave me alone! I got my work to do.1

My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6 -
Agree or disagree: as a developer guaranteeing your work, when you accept a deposit from a client as a milestone payment, you should not spend that money until the client signs off on the milestone in case they decide your work is unsatisfactory and want to go elsewhere.11

It seems like sensitive websites that need more priority to work fine are the ones that do not. I'm talking about government, school, bank, & service provider sites. Or it's just my retarded country.9

I would love to get into more frameworks, but half of them make 90% of your work harder, are not documented well enough or are just confusing what they actually offer. 😥1

Sometimes it confuses me, if I have to use pointers or not in c++ & qt. Especially when both variants work fine. :)1

After I took some time off from work, I decided to accept the offer for maintenance of two projects. Those are from two old clients, so I think I will not stress too much, since I know what to expect most of the time.
The issue is, sometimes I have a hard time to keep concentration. In the past, I could work for 3h straight, totally focused, would pause for 20min for stretch, and then come back to work. Now I can only focus for 30min or 1h, and after a pause, it's hard to concentrate again.
There is a lot going on in my life right now, and I know the worry is probably distracting me. I'm trying to listen instrumental music, drinking coffee... But that's not enough. Somebody has any tip?6 -
I usually only work for a couple of hours at a time. I will work for a bit, then take 15 to 30 minutes playing a game or riding the motorcycle. I found that this raises my productivity and I also got more done faster believe it or not.
-
I'm writing c# code, does not work, wrote the same code in python just to see if I'm thinking the wrong way, nope, it worked in python then fixed the c# code...
I might be a c# racist or I don't know.2 -
Somehow I find NOT working much more exhausting than working.
By "not working" I mean being blocked for days/weeks by procedural, technical or communication stuff (peeps I depend on are busy with other HI-prio tasks, waiting for approvals, etc.), where I have to keep on pinging them for updates, monitoring comms channels for news, finding smth to do to justify for the clients the 8 hours I bill them for.
Just let the man work alright!!! GIMME WORK!!!!4 -
Rage ? at work ?
my employer says I'm already toxic and ungrateful. If i get a third bad adjective ill be out of the door !
Judging by the work load and type im getting these days id say they are trying to get me to open that door and leave myself.
Hell, i would love to if i were not being ghosted by other companies or offered less compensation -

Hello not a rant,
Are there MS SQL Server admins here who self taught and learn thru self study?
I work in a company where they use MS SQL Server as the database. I would love to 'understand' how to write efficient queries, and how things really work, not just selecting and joining table blindly and not understanding how things work.
Would you recommend how you understand MS SQL Server, or what learning path you took?
Thank you. I would appreciate any suggestions and comments.10 -
that BS thing you do when your too lazy to code and just copied a code from an existing class and renamed the vars even if it does not work or not being used just to show your boss that your working hard as f*2

There's a senior dev at work who deflects and delays every project while working on his own freelance jobs most of the day. Fortunately, my performance is not tied to his.
Hero, or villain?7 -
How hard it is percieved by management to do something in code is proportional to whether or not it's a task that sales or the CEO wants, versus what the developers need. Developers want to rewrite something, or fix infrastructure? Too much work can't justify it. Sales wants to clone Google Search? We'll expect it by next month.1

Do you prefer working remote or in the office?
I like to view these as equal choices. I don't think offices are as bad as some people make them up to be (of course heavily depends on the environment and company!). In opposed to working remote, offices can help you focus more on work and leave work problems "at work".
While, if you're working remote, it's not unlikely for work and personal life to become so intertwined that it's hard to tell them apart anymore. It's hard to not think about work at home if home is where you work.
I believe an ideal is somewhere inbetween - not entirely remote, but not entirely office focused either. Mixing and matching seems like the one approach where you get to have most of the benefits, but with the least negatives. It doesn't seem necessary to always be at the office but it also doesn't seem good for you to always be cooped up at home.7 -
90% of work as a developer is not development,
it's guesswork and communication, trying to make sense of requirements and third-party software documentation or filling in the blanks if both are missing.7 -
anyone who says women gossip don't pay enough attention to guys, specially when they talk about women. what is it to me that you don't think x girl dresses well or that this aspect of her is unattractive? we're at work, it's not tinder39

I work in an office building which are blocks of cubicle farms. Each cubicle farm has about 50 seats. The cubicle farm I work in
1) People don’t step out to take personal calls. They talk on their phone for a good 30 minutes loudly and multiple people do this at the same time sometimes.
2) people chit chat and make noise and have more conversations than do actual work and it is noisy as fuck. People who do not have work go around chatting up people and it is loud and again noisy and distracting
3) people take calls via Skype or whatever and they’re loud too most of the time.
When I walk into work it feels like a fucking market and I think am gonna lose my mind soon. I just cannot concentrate at all.
Before anyone recommends noise cancelling headphones or anything, I really can’t because I have to constantly help out people and am being asked questions frequently and noise cancelling headphones don’t really do much for voices.
I’m pissed as fuck and really upset I can’t work because of these shitheads. I’m not sure who do I give the D to.3 -
My first interview question to a project on the second day at my new job:

Or even worse nudez.

hi, i have a question of a darker note, hope you won't mind.
How do you deal with monotony at work ?
The more experienced i get, the more my work becomes monotonous. I understand that it's impossible to know everything, but i feel as if there's not that much knowledge left for everyday work.
Sure there will always be new scenarios and more advanced/marginal stuff, but they don't appear that often.
i get depressed (not clinically, just very bad state overall) when i stop learning, which is why i've been strugling quite a bit recently.
i have ~3 years in web dev. So i'm not some kind of guru or anything even close, but this is the problem i have right now.
i've been thinking about switching languages or specialisation (i do enjoy DevOps/sysadmin work), but i'm afraid i'll have the same problem pretty soon...13 -
Data Science MSc instead of Computer Science. Or realising that my first 4 years of work was as a Data Scientist and I should have asked to have my job title reflect that. Skipping faang, at least relatively early in my career (that's a whole thing I want to write about but not rn). Not spending a year out of work due to health problems & nearly dying.
It could have been better, but I've enjoyed it.4 -
Are you willing to share details of your salary, or for contractors your daily/hourly rate? If you're not, that's interesting to know too.
Interesting to know;
- Currency (hopefully obviously)
- Location of work (or if remote, primary location of employer?)
- Contract type (FT/PT employee, contractor/freelancer)
- Job title (or general activity for contractors)
- Number of years in role/contracting
- Whether or not you would or have shared your salary with a co-worker (perhaps you're willing to share here but not with a co-worker)
- Gender
The 'Why is it soooo taboo to ask co-workers salary?' question made me think about this (https://devrant.com/rants/1557306/...)8 -
These moments I'm too dumb to even setup a library or anything. That's just so frustrating! I spent many hours realising OpenCV may not work on my machine6

i received a job offer to work at area 51 on extremely sophisticated projects primarily as a c++ engineer. this is the highest pay offer i have ever seen, which i can not discuss right now, but what else to expect when you work for the government. i have bad perception about this. should i take this job or refuse?5

React Native so far today:

Used to work tech support at a school.
The sheer amount of people that would come from buildings away to ask for help with the mouse or keyboard not working was weird. The annoying part, most have probably guessed, was that it was always just unplugged. Teacher's did this too. -
Not weird but f*cking annoying co-worker. Everything that sets people off he did. Also he never learn stuff like personal hygiene and stuff. One time my boss had to tell him to go home and not return to work until he took a shower. Also had didn't seem to have any work ethic at all and that got me fuming angry at him as he refused to do any work at all. When I was working in his apartment and got stuff to do he normally did and had way more experience in than me his coworkers were astounished how "fast" I worked when in realitiy I was taking it really easy. And this dickhead managed to make his stuff and then use the other time to play games ore whatever. In the end no one in the IT apartment wanted him to work there anymore. And he even managed to offend and insult our boss so much that he had to call him Mr. instead of his name. My co-workers even collected money for him to come to work looking like a human being and taking care of himself. I'm so glad I am no longer required to talk to or even work with this moron ever again
-
Do you guys worry about your non disclosure agreements at work? I use my personal computer at work so I do my own projects on the same computer as work but it makes me a bit uneasy. We're a broke startup and I'm lucky to have the job so I'm not going to ask for a computer.
Also, are you aware of it when you make rants- trying not to be too specific? Or are you not worried?7 -
I really think I prefer to be judged in an interview based on a walk through of a project you would want me to work on or a project to work on at a specified time or even my public projects in my repo, not some theoretical basics of programming.
Frankly, most times I barely remember this basic shits but obviously use them as the need arise in projects.1 -
Thinking about quitting college more and more.
Not because it's hard, but because I can't bear with it anymore. I had a 3 day break and I noticed I didn't want to just disappear anymore.
What will I if I quit? Work. Try to find work in something electronics or programming related. I know my chances are slimmer than someone who did finish, but I can't...
I dunno3 -

Motivation, inspiration... works for either.1 -
I've received new instructions at work and I would like to know your opinion. We are two at work, my boss and I..
From now on, projects are estimated, we own the responsability of delivering our tasks to the date each individual. We will work with estimates + error margin of 30%, meaning we do the estimate and add 30% to the hours. We also set a deadline date, ideally a week or two later - this date will be given to clients. If we have not met our estimates including the error margin, we do overtime. We have to own each task our selves, and personally take the responsability for our assignments.6 -
Don't blame the teachers, they don't know the latest technologies themselves, they are mostly graduates, who have almost no work exp, so they might not know latest technologies or how to use em, neither do universities fund them to learn them
P.S. Not a teacher, just put yourself in their shoes2 -
I’ve discovered I can almost never do business with friends or become friends with previously non-friend clients. It becomes too often an excuse not to pay me for my work.3

There will always be times when you will need to understand/modify horribly written code, or have to work with a fellow "programmer" who is clueless about what programming actually is.
In such situations, not losing your cool is a necessary evil. -
Today a functional analyst said to me : The display need to be always the same, zoom or not. I think she don’t know how a web page work.

Not sure it's so much about my vacation, but my boss' one. I look forward to uninterrupted days in the office where I can work without much small talk or having to explain my logic in great detail to a non-technical boss. So, when I heard he was away for a week, I thought, great, I'll have some time to focus...
Whoah there, not so fast. Turn up at work on Monday morning to find my boss online on Slack waiting to chat with me. He's on the other side of the world. It's the middle of the night for him. And he says I'm not allowed to work remotely... -
VS Code, WTF is wrong with your tab stops?
I set to 2 and you still use 4.
I say use spaces for tabs and you still put tabs in my document.
Tab settings by doc type? Not existing or working.
Damn you!
Just work5 -
Today, I randomly remembered a guy who was doing an internship at my college's tech lab. From what I gathered (I wasn't really part of that group) all they had to do was familiarize themselves with one of the many systems available and... I suppose maintain it or improve it.
.... Poor guy spent the first 2 to 3 weeks just trying to get Ruby on Rails to work. The work he was doing was not (and would never be) critical so there was not much of a sense of urgency.
Someone should have told him to use a fresh VM. Guy was trying to get it to work in his private laptop running windows. A doomed endeavor.3 -
How do you decide whether or not a program should be written to solve a problem or do some work?
Related to: https://devrant.com/rants/952746/...1 -
I was invited to on-site interview with Amazon, but the more I think about this opportunity the more doubts I have. After reading a lot of reviews, it is expected to be the hardest job with a lot of pressure and overtime. My biggest concern - the poor work life balance. Spending all my life at work is not what I really want.
Should I give it up or does it still worth trying?5 -
I just work without thinking about whether I want to do it or not. The more you think about it, the more you don't want to do it. Just get to it.

I have no burnouts. I dont have kids, I'm full of energy, I'm ready to crush it. BUT every goddamn time i come to a company they run out of work/clients/projects. I end up doing nothing or some video tuts, and then change the company. I WANNA WORK! GIVE ME SOME REACT WORK, PLEASE! I WANNA FEEL DEADLINE PRESSURE! I WANNA COMPLAIN THAT I HAVE BURNOUT! I'M TIRED OF VIDEO COURSES AND TO-DO APPS!
I'm paid money to do nothing. As appealing as it sounds, it's not when you're a junior dev trying to get some experience.
Am I doing something wrong??? -
Hey y'all. So my manager is giving me "permission" to do coding related activities. I'm part of support, so it's a privilege to be going out of scope of my work.
But I gotta ask, is it me or is 3 hours everyday for large scaled coding project a bit short?
I feel like 3 hours is not enough time to ramp up and then do productive work. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I am being setup for failure.4 -
How well can bash be used on windows?
i've used it a bit now and it seems to work really well, but i'm wondering if it's possible to efficiently and fully work on it. Are there any drawbacks or missing functionallity that is a must for development but not implemented (yet) in bash ?
i'll be forced to work on windows and i'm wondering which option is better - VM or bash?12 -
Hello everyone, once again I’m asking for your help, for the first time I’m working as a counterpart for an external development company, this project already has a few months of work but there are not any technical documentation or quality metrics.
Would you suggest to ask all the necessary stuff with times, quality and requirements or it’s already impossible to do that?5 -
How do you background work in Android? Easy, just use one of the following (which may or may not work as expected depending on what version of Android it's running on, or how long it happens to run for, or what's in the background or foreground, or what triggers it, or what wind the direction is blowing in, or how long since you last gave a fuck)
background Service, or foreground Service, or IntentService, or AlarmManager, or JobScheduler, or WorkManager, or FUCK YOU ANDROID -

today i almost had my first intentional 'fuck it, i declare this bug a feature'-moment. then it suddenly worked. i don't know whether to be happy for it to work or to be annoyed not knowing what the hell happened.3

Every developer thrives to be the best. But, it's not only the skills, hard work or knowing infinite languages makes you the best. It only makes you the good.
Along with skills, hard work & the languages, the best one needs to have those instincts about the possible solutions to a problem and ability to decide and implement the most efficient solution cleanly in least amount of time.
I'm thriving to be the best. Are you?3 -
1. Finish/start to work on side projects
2. Learn Erlang or something similar
3. Read atleast one book per month (may or may not be related to programming) -
I have a hard desicion to make and I don't know how to choose...
I'll graduate tech uni in a year. I want to work in a start up when I am done. A few days ago my father offered me a position in his company as CTO. Despite the fact that I have ZERO management experience. I'll have to work for him for roughly ten years, then he wants to quit. Do I take the high paying job that I might not enjoy or do I try my luck with a startup/ software company...7 -
Today I had the pleasure of adding a feature to our intranet service written by two of my colleagues since they suffer from severe unix dyslexia. One of them was sick so I sat down with the other one and somehow he didn't know how to interpret the output, how to correctly call it from the terminal or even which parameters are needed for it to work so I had to try and decipher their code.
How can one work on something for a month and not know anything about it?1 -
Fire every single teacher who runs from self education. Someone who keeps themselves up to date should be keeping students up to date.
Secondly, assign each class a major project which starts from 4th semester with one of the faculty acting as the Project Manager. Allow each student to choose their area of interest and work on that module. This will help develop team work and teach how not to rm rf production server or db:drop production database ^.^ -
If I were an employee again, I would do a short stint in a startup to learn the ropes of a business, and then work in a big company, because big companies are effing slow. ie job is secure compared to the risk in Startups.
Use that sweet ass time, to create a secret github account to do your side project, while dragging your actual work like for days. xD
And be an average or slightly above employee for them to retain you but don't go above and beyond to get more work and fake praises and a measly bonus, or other employees to envy you. There is simply no incentive in most cases. "We are a big family" is not a great reason.
But lastly never lose sight of your original goal. It is easy to slack off and become one of them dunce.7 -
There's a tech job fair happening today, and I either have to leave work early or just not come to work at all to be able to go there. I really wanna get a new job, and I might regret it if I don't go there. Should I not come to work?20
-
I actually like where I currently work, sure it has problems and some office politics. The work is not always exciting but what makes it good is not having someone breathing down my neck about timesheets, noone cares if the hours you work are not exactly business hours and a bunch of other stuff.
What I really like though is having a boss who backs my judgement. If I refuse to commit to timelines or work without being given the information I need he'll support me. I've had too many yes men as bosses which always ends up with the devs coping all the blame when everything goes belly up. -
I'd love to work for NASA or Space X and be one of the first to colonize mars. Should that not work out, I also really want to work for Google and do some freelance work on the side maybe. And all of that is only true if by then I haven't created the next big tech thing.

My biggest flaw when working in IT: I will refuse to prioritize time- consuming work with minimal added value (cf premature optimization, 0.001% edge cases) when I have a backlog of work that will add much more, obvious value and I will not budge to manager or architect power-plays and tendencies to micromanage my responsibilities, even if it may eventually end up getting me in trouble.2

Not a rant!
But I want to know how much do programmer make? (Money wise) and would it be better to be a freelancer or to work for a company? What are some pros and cons for working in a company and for being a freelancer.5 -
When - webkit-background-clip does not work with any kind of transition or animation and you're forced to make duplicate div on top of original without it and opacity:0. Just because designer want's quick fade transition.

Someone give me courage to change my job :( I'm bored-out at work and am not motivated to write some applications, as I'm thinking I'm going to get paid less or not given a job I want (I have a basic certification, no degree in CS)
Argh2 -
Can I just say, I am NOT a fan of fixing things or doing things for people because THEY work on the WEEKENDS. I mean like I'm chilling and maybe working on some stuff or having my me time, listening to some music or whatever and that's when you have someone from an internal team in your company (not my team) come to you with a bug or some FAVOR because apparently they're working even though it's a SUNDAY. It's just ruins your whole freaking mood.
Idk if I sound cocky or whatever but I just had to let this out.3 -
Wish everyone could understand that it's not learning the programming language or the 'best practices' that makes you good it's understanding how things work together and how to mix them to create new things that do what you want is the real engineering2

Limitation as a way to force creativity. What do you think about this?
Platforms such as Vine or Twitter limits you somehow, but people still found a way to build their creativity around and grow a following. At the same rate, most Game Jams give you a theme and sometimes some kind of limitations and the result is in almost every jam at least a few interesting games.
Now, looking specifically at dev work, some frameworks or languages limit you somehow. Lets think about Rust safety or Node single threadness.
Do you think those work as limitation to enhance creativity as well? Not necessary by design.5 -
I'd probably try to become a professional tabletop game master and also focus on getting better at arts to do commissions for some extra cash.
If that would not work out as well, I'd probably try to get into mentoring or teaching. -
Okay guys now real deal.
I am planning to move to Portugal or something like that.
I think I’m gonna need full time remote work, seems like that one is not happening with me now(part time)
Soo I do react, and all kinds of node selenium, bash stuff . But want to improve on redux and go to react native also.
Long story short shoot the work on me :)11 -
I've never really understand why i should use tools with bad UI or even command line if it's not really necessary! I'm mean, we've FUCKING 2017, give me a proper UI! I want to work, not search every damn feature of the tool!

What do you do when your family time conflicts with your work time? What can I do to rotate my work schedule forward so I can get some fucking sleep without giving up on either work or my family?
This sucks, I get like 5 hours of sleep at night and my job wants me to be here no later than 9 for whatever reason.
Not to mention my commute is about 45-60 minutes both ways
Not to mention I'm making just enough money to cover my bases. Going to Costa Rica for a vacation is no where near my ability.. hell even driving across the state for a weekend trip would be wildly out of budget.
I've tried asking for a flexible schedule and ability to work from home as needed but its just become a circular debate.
I'm getting burned out and always feel tired, have no energy to stay motivated or give a shit4 -
Build or Buy NAS ?
I'm currently into buying either the 218+ or 918+ synology, unsure if ill regret not having 4 bays for expanding options?
Hows all yours set up?
#want want it to stream and work with photos and movies like a mediacenter aswell7 -
So asked to help out on an extra project that another Dev ( who is a senior developer ) is working on and I go to clone the repo but find 15 or so commit messages on the master branch saying "Work on feature x" (not an actual x). This is going to be fun...
-
If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything.
No one said that standing for something can have u feeling so conflicted.
Currently 'striking' because I haven't been paid for the month of January. Haven't been to work and haven't done any work (except support requests from a client we work with)
I have recently been pretty adamant about my conditions at work but I do feel a little unreasonable as the reason they can't seem to pay me seems to be some issue with the bank. However on the other hand I do not appreciate that I have not been contacted or informed about how the situation is being dealt with since Monday.
Am I being unreasonable?? Or have I been in a bad situation for so long that it seems wrong to call it out??3 -
Why the hell does NOBODY, including Apple, figure out, how USB-C is supposed to work? I'm tired of shifty half-assed implementations with some having no USB 3.1 (Apple), some not supporting current DisplayPort standards (Apple, Dell) or limiting the speed to USB2.0... *GAAAAH*
Future seems to suck pretty hard.3 -
Context: Working in a small IT department of an SME that sells wine during my uni placement year.
Having the MD come into the office cubicle without notice or even knocking and always expecting people to work long hours (when his dad was more of a _work efficiently 3h per day_ type of person) and not hold his promise on getting me to work on projects relevant to my degree and the initial contract (where I was also paid less than promised). -
So....
Another machine not working till morning.
That's what happens when the engineer knows a bit how to operate the machines but doesn't have a grasp on how cutting tools work...
Replacing 60€ tools every 4 hours that should last a week is not profitable.
When so many tools are spent that there's no more in stock.
Also manufactor has cutting parameters for a reason... Making the tools work 3 times faster or deeper does not mean profit, means damaged machines and tools.
As comparison, think over clocking a cpu to 7000hz and pushing it to the max 24h a day...5 -
Sometimes as an intern I legitimately have no work to do and I feel awful about it. Sitting here twiddling my thumbs makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong. You can only ask for work so much... Trying to find things on our backlog to work on but they're all unfinished/not ready or too verbose / require too much for me to take on.
Mmmmehhhh I don't know what to dooooo3 -
Told the 3rd party developer we wanted a feature in the software they are developing. When you change the master data X we want the corresponding historical Y's to be updated. I have not seen the code or database. He wants me to explain how the functionality should work... I... I dunno how to respond...

Sad story , i guess im not the only one.
I have literally no friends who like to code or who seem to like but are lazy. Nothing
Is boring to work on personal projects or school projects like this :/
But today found out that theres only one in my school who does this, he is not that much into it but when he asked me what languages i use, also if i use php ...
I was happy inside to know that im not the only one in my school :D
That's all! Is here anyone or was in this situation , having no friends who like to code 🤔1 -
i have to work with some caveman technology called rexify.org at my job and there is not a single fucking tutorial or guide explaining how to work with this bullshit. Why do these deepshit companies choose the shittiest 50 year old technologies instead of evolving into new ones?8

Special work area meeting. Partners from around the globe came in. Call in or you flew in. Close enough, have to attend in person. Hundreds of people there. Starts at 9, broke at noon, picked back up at 1, ended at 6. Focus? Improving sales. About 98% of the people there did not make sales. About 70% did not work on bids and proposals. It was extremely painful and boring. And my project manager didn't know why we were so upset the next day. It had been extremely "informative" to her.1

Other dev in my department thought it was okay to comment out the latest version of jquery lib that was used in the project and replace it with about 2 year old version to make his feature work. He did not informed anybody about this and today when build was tested, blame was on me because the feature i implemented does not work. I found issue was because of old jquery lib he put.
Funny thing is, his feature does not work with latest jquery version.
I guess it's gotta be either me or him. -
I have gained quite a lot of coding confidence recently.
Im quite confident i can deploy a full working application or a mobile app.
I have some inspiration bit i am still not sure of how much work/investment does it take to make something that generates money.
Of course im not including million dollar ideas. No my goal is to make small apps/applications or freelancing jobs off work to generate some extra money (noticeable enough that the investment is worth the return).
Obviously the best way to learn is to dive in and im not asking to know about your golden egg that you are harvesting.
But do you have any tips/advice or experiences to share?3 -
attempt neater/cleaner implementation, doesn't work
attempt ugly implementation, it works
maybe one day i'll learn how to write good typescript and react
easier to throw the args around than try to figure out the correct syntax to pass a function to a child component, or not have a react hook closest to where it gets used? -
I had to change my password at work on Friday, on vacation until this coming Friday, taking bets on whether or not I lock myself out when I get back.

Client deescalation needed and intervention by company leader...
Client refuses to test - too much work they say.
Client wants a lot of changes - but cannot define what.
But most frustrating... Even as we tried to with all patience that was left to find out what they were doing aka how they work, what work flows, documents and so on were involved, they basically started a team discussion and seemed to work all differently...
And the project should be a complete sale and warehouse solution, suited and written for their needs.
Really? How can a company like this work?
It's not the first time I've dealt with hard projects or 'weird' customers, but really the first time I have no fucking clue what I should do.
Can someone please summon Ctulhu?3 -
I'm very sad.
I don't pretend to work on the next Facebook, Google search engine or something else.
I would to be part of something useful.
But i work in a shitty company where quality, architecture planning and TDD are underrated.
Only to build very simple webapplications, where things you take for granted like server side input or a simple error page without java stacktrace are missing or not planned properly.
We have functional analysts, but worst specs ever.
I hate all of this... -
Have you been scolded at workplace for not finishing the work before sprint end and the reason being not your laziness but your incompetency or zero/bare knowledge on the work?
How to feel less a loser in such situations?7 -
Dealing with relationships when you are a night owl. I don't burn the midnight oil like in my twenties but I don't want to go to sleep at 1030pm. Midnight is typical but I feel my actions affect my missus as she can't sleep when I'm not there...that said..she has issues sleeping anyway or nodding off. Whereas I can fall asleep in front a TV that's on no problems or whenever my head hits a pillow. I sleep on the couch when I stay up so I don't disturb her. Or does everyone here have a cushy work life balance job where you only work 9 to 5 and don't need to be on the pc.

I swear it is easier to do a full-stack application all by yourself rather than make a front-end and a back-end newbie work alongside you in a way that justifies the pay being given to them by the project manager(for a freelance project).
Not that they are bad or anything, but it takes more effort to offload work to them with enough explanation to convey the expectations properly while accounting for the learning they are yet to do.1 -
At work, how does your team store and share passwords to DBs, machines, other logins used by everyone (not linked to a specific person) or is needed by an app?6
-
I heard some of you develop web applications in c# (or think that's a good idea).
Since I like both c# and web a lot, I was wondering: what stack do you use, and how well does that work? Or is it just a pain in the not-to-be-named-rear-end?5 -
Music tends to get me through the day of work. To build up enough energy to do it all again the next day, I usually stick to something like video games or drawing. It's not a very exciting routine, but it keeps me sane (enough).

Random question to everyone out there:
Do you guys use a specific keyboard?
As in a mechanical or just the off the shelf keyboard? Do you invest in ergonomic ones or not?
I ask because I've been looking at ortholinear keyboards and was wondering if they work or if they're even worth it.8 -
Is it just me or whenever I have to work on a new app I end up spending eons just trying to decide on what programming language to use and what not?

I realized that my mood swings based on how my gf behaves. She is one of the few triggers
If she is sad depressed angry or disrespectful towards me i am no longer in a positive mood, it kills the whole vibe. On the contrary if she is happy acts feminine behaves normally and is respectful towards me i also become happy and in a better mood
Bad mood does not stop me from doing my work, but depending on how terribly bad it becomes, it may or may not impact my coding and work life. Since the main and central tool for coding is my brain and mental state, not physical muscles, Once the central part of anyone's tool (thats used to get the job done) is attacked or threatened, it weakens the person's ability to perform as good as they have been, or worse, completely blocks them off from performing well
This is one of my biggest fears; Anyone who's capable, intentionally or not, of weakening the central part of my tool for work (in this case mind and mental state), begins to gain power and leverage over me (hold on this is actually a brilliant idea to have in mind, a malicious way to exploit and leverage the target victim is by attacking the central tool they use to get the work done)
However i am a mentally strong person (due to way too much trauma from school, solving extreme difficulty coding problems, hoes and financial struggles), but it does not help if i am attached to a person who i have feelings towards, a person who became the second half of me, "the better half". It is difficult to reject or all of a sudden stop loving the person who you loved for years or months. Such person can more easily attack my central tool
My question is--does anyone know how to protect the central tool from anyone being able to exploit or weaken it? For example if my gfs bad behavior puts me in a bad mood, how to prevent that from happening? How do i not care? Or how do i care but still not let it affect my mood in a negative light? If that makes sense10 -
Guys, I've been learning about XDSD and... it seems to good to be true. Anyone here has experience with it? Or has someone worked for Zerocracy and has an experience to report?
Please PLEASE tell me it's not a scam. I'd LOVE to work this way. -
"Longest you worked without rest + why?"
Maybe around 7hrs or so? It may not be much, but the thing is that I had to work almost the whole night through.
I was about to show off a game at the school festival, and I had to finish multiple playable stages while not having a dedicated stage editor application; I was using Notepad as the stage builder. I had to work through the night before the event.
Ended up catching the flu after the event, but I don't regret it.1 -
It really blows when dev is down and no one replies to my messages. It's as if it being down doesn't affect them because they're not doing work or something.3
-
when you work in a small team and there's no transparency.
TL asked for help and I gave the solution that worked for my env, and then TL just went silent for days.
is it so hard to feedback whether is it working or not? -
For once I like stupid devs.
The initial version of Live Captions doesn't work for phone, zoom, etc bc these apps have some do not caption flag I think... Or Google itself added them to a blacklist.
Well I made a video appt with my Dr for a quick follow-up visit.
I had this crazy setup at first on my PC/webcam but in the end the conference program somehow didn't work properly, video lagged/disconnected. (Ok I hate whoever wrote this)
So I tried phone expecting it not to work... But it did.
(Also had another phone set up to pick up the sound using Live Transcribe... But problem is it's pick up my voice instead) -
I hate having to ask for work when I'm out or blocked, it's a dynamic I'm not at all comfortable with yet it seems to be a weekly requirement.3
-
Do you think that's a good idea to work with 4 developers on a shared development server without functional or technical specs and versioning software or testing methods/environment?
Just asking for a friend, not for my future employer...2 -
Has it ever happened to you that you do not want to program any more?
It is frustrating... Sometimes I would like to start an idea but then .. nothing, stopped.
How do you solve this kind of situation?
It's not only about work, but I mean also in the freetime where you Can develop your idea or your expirement5 -
Last Windows update corrupted all system UWP (or how to name "updated" settings) applications and start menu does not work at all, awesome.
Reverted to a safe point, installed update again, same result 🤷♂️2 -
As a newbie dev, I'm looking for partners to work together. You know I feel like unmotivated right now for some unknown reasons. So I thought of changing the pace by meeting with some new people who feel the same. By working on some not-real-world-project or silly ideas together, we can learn how to work in collaboration. We can also share some new ideas together!1

OneNote is just a big pile of shit.
I‘ve been trying for three hours now to share a Notebook (OneNote Desktop to OneNote Desktop).
It just does not work. It used to work. Microsoft broke sharing.
If the other person invites me via Mail or even MS-Account I neither get Notificiations nor an E-Mail with a link nor am I able to select the Notebook somewhere. It‘s. Just. Useless.
OneDrive also sucks.
Microsoft tries to offer solutions for everything and nothing is finished and fully functional. It sucks. People using OneDrive suck. I just want to do my work.1 -
Fucking hate it.....
Almost everybody on holidays and I as a Junior have the responsibility that everything should work...
Now since 6h ago internet connection at the main office is down and I can't really log in from Home Office. Just reading and understanding a few tickets and trying to get our partners to maybe shift work to tomorrow so that they can actually work on our systems...
Now I get blamed that I don't show up at work (even though I called there and got said I should stay home) and testers can't work and stuff, although they can do other stuff and everyone should be able to work without problems. PL tries to call a wrong number while not having Teams, the company just switched to and further blames me for not being able to be contacted...
It's not even my fault...
Now I'm not even sure if I should get to Office now for 2h and do nothing there or at the earliest tomorrow morning to maybe fix some stuff, which are not important at all, cause they wouldn't be problems with a working internet connection... -
Is an art director/manager that makes designs for an existing website expected to brief the developer on how he wants his new designs to work? Or is the developer expected to innately understand what his functional desire is from the design itself?
My art director/manager claims that he shouldn't have to log into the backend to see how things relate to one another, and that his designs alone should imply what is intended.
When some design element overlaps an existing image gallery, am I expected to magically know whether this element is singular or partaining to the current image shown?
I want to know whether or not me getting mad at him for not telling me how he wants stuff to work is valid, and whether or not I should demand that he briefs me how his design relate to existing taxonomy.
Am I the bad guy?4 -
I'm so stressed at work this week that I finally needed to find some relief...
I revived my NLegs app... Been staring at girls all night but not sure which part is the most satisfying... The app or the girls...
But now I can't sleep....5 -
Im running into a wall of stupidity again. I have to work with kendo and fix chat functionality. Not a clue what i’m doing or how to implement functionality and documentation is shit. How am i gonna survive this deadline :( trial and error is not the way to go that’s for sure2

Is anyone around experienced with SDR, especially the HackRF?
I am trying to send OOK data at a certain frequency but it doesn't work. I am basically recording the wave, then using ooktools to decode the wave to binary and the hackrf_ook to send the binary. It doesn't work...
Using GNURadio for replay attacks works great, since I am not testing it on a rolling code device.
Has anyone managed to transmit binary (or hex) with the HackRF or any other SDR as a matter of fact? I cant use rfcat with the HackRF. -
I'm currently starting to develop a simple web app to access a database, just simple read, write, update stuff. Doesn't need to be fancy or anything, just work.
Now I asked a PHP dev I know for help and he told me I should use Symfony and Easy Admin Bundle. I'm not sure rn if it'd be worth it to get to know how to work with frameworks or not. What do you guys think?
Btw, I'm not planning on doing a lot more web development.3 -
The problem is not just the academe, but also the students.. they only choose CS as a scapegoat for bar/board/licensure exams, or they heard it was one of the highest paying jobs or ITs have the opportunity to work from home or on a google-like working place.. without even thinking whether they really like computers or not! We are being contaminated with bunch of xxxxxxx(i cant think of a word to describe them) .. Let's filter them freshmen and give them hard maths or design exams before entering CS

Tech and product teams have to be aligned. If not, there’s chaos where dev teams suffer. No skunk project(s), no adhoc project(s), No special or pet projects for the CTO or Product Manager. Figure out what needs to get done, plan a road map, plan milestones to get there, consider the folks who ACTUALLY does the work. Protect your teams work-life balance.1

Balancing a professional internship alongside school is a huge pain. I find myself levying one or the other to allow more time to be spent with the alternative, i.e taking short work days to do more homework, or skipping class to get rest for work the next day. There's a good chance that if you don't see me at work, I'm in class, and if you don't see me there, I'm probably doing homework, and if I'm not then I'm asleep.
I can't wait until I graduate in a few months and can really just focus on building my professional development skills. School is taxing and largely unnecessary.4 -
How is it that Facebook ads play right before the climax or high point of any video. Just when I'm interested to see what happens next, bam, like clock work, an ad pops up. It does not seem to be a fixed time, but more to do with the specific content of the video. Is it just me or is there some sinister algorithm at work that can detect the moment in a video the viewer will be most interested? so the viewer will have no choice but to sit through the advert to see what happens next. Or is the timing of the ad predetermined by some other means ?6
-
Good day, fellow Devs.
In your workspace (like company you work for), Is it alright to sit anywhere you feel comfortable or they decide to you where you need to sit....
Right now am not understanding!!??5 -
I just experienced a new level of wut at my job. Web Engineering has a Google group email. This morning someone at work sent us an email about canceling a work order (and he didn’t know how to cancel it)…for a plumbing issue 😑Wrong engineering department, my dude. And you can cancel your work order by going to the request system where you submitted it or the email receipt of you request, which was certainly not to this Google group email. You have the work order number, so you must have an email somewhere about your request. And how’d he get this email?? I’m seriously wondering if this is a weird phishing attempt.2

not work for starting a function below it?

For me the best way to get unstuck is to go for a walk outside the office and think in peace. I work for a small company and we all share a working space so the distractions are endless... Either someone's talking loudly on the phone, or they're asking me questions (and the headphones, for some reason, do not work as a do not disturb sign for my coworkers) so at times it's impossible to concentrate...
When I'm working at home on my own projects, usually on the weekends, I go for a brief swim at the beach. It works wonders.... -
The ideal and presumption to be able to help whoever in their work and stuff.
Being able to save them frustration and time....
.... Or not 😈 -
Is it just me that would prefer to work with Senior Engineers rather than mid level engineers?
Some mid level engineers are just pain in the ass. This one guy insist on getting perfection in all of the requirements. The problem is that if you work with software/lib for so long, you realize that most if not all software are buggy or have limitations. You can't expect everything to be perfect. Sometimes something just works/don't work and nobody knows why. Need lots of shortcuts/hacks just to make it work. I would say that 80% completion is good enough, especially since we're running out of time and manpower.
I noticed that Senior Engineers tend to be less strict. If it works then it's good enough, if we found some bugs later then we'll fix it. I like this practicality so we can tackle more important issues at hand.
I hope that I don't have to work in the same project with this guy again.2 -
Finally decided to do remote in to finish some work... but the machine is off...
Not sure if this is good or bad... -
About to tell the boss I can spend more time tracking my time and moving tasks around in the latest of the project management softwares I’ve had to use here, or I can do the actual work. Not both.

I created two projects and they are now under testing. Now i am working on two other projects (& more to come). I'd be working on something but i get a lot of emails to do some changes or fix some bugs.
I feel i'm slow but it's only me working on those 4 projects, i can't stop something and work on something else!!
Should i work more at home? Or is it not my fault?
Nobody complained on my work, i'm giving good results although i feel i am losing control, but what if they think i'm a person who can't manage well? any advice???5 -

I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5 -
Fuck, fuck, fuck!!!
I just realise I had a lot of work to be done!!!
And it's completely my fault.
Not sure if I feel myself more stupid or fucked. -

If you had to evacuate your office due to a fire without your laptop and the office was destroyed could you continue to work? Do you have offsite recovery laptops?
Developers usually have flexibility where they can work from but sometimes do not have backup machines available and configured.
As a side question - would your other critical processes - accounting, HR, sales be able to continue to keep your business going in a disaster - or would they be like deer in headlights?6 -

So, today until Sunday, a fairly general strike is going on based on how our government wants to set up our pension or something..
Now I have to call and wake up my friggin' dad to bring me to work, and probably come and get me too...
That's not all, even.. most people still go to work by car, generating a lot of traffic...
Will I be too late at work today? Probably.

I don't have many friends. I don't know if I need them or not. I feel like I should be focusing on my works rather than making friends or talking to people. But I don't if it will work4

So im working for this company and we work monday to friday....and i think my CTO is "funny"...we can be free half the week with not much work to do or we actually have completed all the work that was described... but he then comes in friday evening and tells us how everything should be working on monday....what everything?! What fucking everything?!!! Mind you we don't come in saturday or sunday......the everything he is talking about is suggestions we had made to him about how the system should work and he said no....now he thinks its a better thing to do....and he pushes all those refactors on the last day of the week....we had all week nigga what the fuck!!!....

My family members are support me, they know I'm unsaveable about this. Only my wife sais when I'm learning (I am before career change), you should stop playing and take care something useful instead. Or when I say I have to work on something, her answer is like, It's not work if you enjoy it and don't get money for it, it is only a hobby.

Will start work probably next week after lots of searching. Few months without work was good life relatively. Wake up whenever you want to, browse reddit how much you want to, way more time to do things that want. Now in new job especially on trial period I will have to learn lot, also that rush to work if I do not want to end work late makes life worse. Full time jobs suck. Half day work would be better but to get even little shorter work week is a big challange. At least when was fired from previous job. Fuck that.
Also probably will take a non remote position because they claim it is low stress. But I believe their codebase sucks, they do not write tests. But they say they are planning to start writing tests. But still most important thing is low stress, but question is how in reality will there be low stress. Or will they fire me quickly even without causing me stress. It would be ideal to learn at least all the tech they are using, so that I would not lag too much because of this, but I have no idea how to quickly learn, I thinik I would need 2 hours after work for learning, which sucks that I will not be able to enjoy at least after work time.
Plus the fucking traffic jams. Why they can't have remote position. Especially when covid cases are growing. -

Bullshit company began to grasp the attendance, let every morning on time to sit on the desk, leave in advance of two or three days to report, why not leave work let us go on time? That management shouldn't bring up overtime requests, that the company will remember our contributions, that's bullshit. It has been forced to work half an hour more every day, but our average working hours are too short, not Shenzhen, Beijing company's working hours are too long, fuck you, why don't you say that their wages are so much higher than our Zhengzhou, a group of idiots, can't earn money began to transpiration our employees1 -
So, in some company if people want to use a phone for any work related business, it should be a phone with 3+ years of promised security updates from manufacturer. So, either an iPhone or a Pixel. Or Android One program. No, they don't buy you one. No, you are not compensated in any way.1

Doing office even when it's vacation day today...
Not because I am a workaholic or there is work pressure from company...
But because I like doing my work as a developer and it's quite peaceful and fun to code for some hours rather than idling around at home figuring out how to kill time especially during this lockdown period...
P.S. Planning to find some time to learn from online tutorials too in the evening 😁2 -
I want to get extra income in my spare time by doing some work on the side. Any suggestions where I can find projects online? Or does anyone have experience on this? Not sure if this is aright way to do. Thanks1

Not even in CS or programming related courses, but got called to work as junior react native.
Fucking pumped.
Any one might recommend me a piece of hardware to develop on? What's the most ideal?4 -
Is GPT3 adversarial? And if not, has there been any work to combine GPT3 with GANs, specifically to improve plausibility or "humanness" or otherwise tune the personality or style of response?1

(0. First off, being a job I'd like — native software development that is — and not having to default to some boring backend job because "mUh WeB's EvRyThInG TodAy")
1. If the commute isn't too long I have no much problem working in office I think, but I want this to be clear: you let me work with the tools I want. Things like CI are understandably imposed, but let me choose whatever IDE/editor, Git client, etc.
Otherwise off to work from home where no one can check
2. Not having assholes colleagues (obnoxious, stupid, interrupting…)
3. A decent pay. Not high or minimum, just what I'm worth
4. Not drowning in meetings. I want to take part to them to clarify some things and understand what's going on, but I don't think I need more than 2 a day. Ah, and let me tell what's wrong if there's anything
5. Be basically respected. I don't want to be overvalued, that can be embarrassing, but I don't want my work to be completely ignored2 -
SAFARI! What the hell do Apple think they are doing? This has to be the worst browser available, or I should say not available! Problem: It won't load pages; it continually freezes; it just doesn't work. And, there is no use clearing out history, resetting, etc. Apple's folly still just does not work. Every update takes it a further step backwards. If this is the best technology on offer, then it does not bode well for the future.

My Mac was being worked on this week so I used Edge on my work computer to watch the Apple presentation... not surprisingly Edge crashed when exiting out. I'm not sure if it's just terrible or it was so confused at Sia's performance it just crashed1

Is it the manager's responsibility or the employer's responsibility to find work? I'm an employee in limbo space. I'm fine spending time to learn things, but feel kinda guilty not picking up stories9
-
I will never work on a project that allows time travel.
Sooner or later humanity will screw it up so bad that the only solution is to lethaly stop it from being invented.
Thats why its not invented yet!2 -
How do all you other devs deal with sleep? Because I am losing my fucking mind I work for myself so I don't go to work at 9am leave at 6pm.
I normally work until 6am and then sleep till 12 drink 3 strong coffee to start functioning again try and do something productive which at the moment involves catching up on the NBA playoffs and then starting work at 6pm.
Due to resent baby I thought shit my life is fucked I haven't left the house in 3 days I need structure routine I need to work 9am to 6pm become human again but I just can't FUCKING sleep it's now 1:30am and I'm trying to sleep.
I know what your thinking why are you on devRant but I've been trying to sleep for the past 3 hours but all I can think about is work code, refactoring, new languages, security, support shit that can wait but I can't get it out my head, keep thinking "ah your not tired you could work", and YES I have a list which get bigger every day wish I had a drug dealer or was still in contact with my old mates so I could get some Valium but it's hot milk and sleeping tablets for me, life is so much easier when you can just fuck of home at the end of the day and forget about work, not having your laptop next to you trying to trick you into opening it. How do other people who work for theirselves deal with the life work balance?4 -
Well most of my friends are developers, so we either are working or going out, eating, drinking or just ranting haha... With my girlfriend and my daughter is a little bit more complicated, but they're there to remind me that not everything in life should be about work

Lately I am facing this issue. I spend a lot of time and did hard work on some specific thing! but it doesn’t seem to work as it should be, so because of this I am disappointed. I don’t know I should be feeling like this or not, but I am questing myself that I am a good developer or not!
It’s not like that I don’t know stuff, I start working on laravel , few months ago. It’s been 4 months, and I already develop a backend of the whole app, but it was not that complex. Recently , I am assigned to this new project, which is very complex, and It was already made by some other developer, so I am new to this and I don’t know how it actually works. But I was assigned to add new functionality to it, and It was kinda complex, like maths and calculation and depending upon the data coming and updating calculations changed. So, I almost work hard and over time for this, and I think I did a good job, but turns out it didn’t. So, I worked again on this, but again turns out it didn’t work out as it suppose to be.
So , After all of my hard work, the code was not right, and that led me to question myself and I am feeling bad. Is this normal? Is it okay to feel at something?3 -
I'm usually really productive when I work from home. At my Seattle gig, I worked from home 3~4 days a week (most of my team was in New York City anyway). My current company does not do remote work well, and I've been terribly unmotivated. Our useless manager took the entire week off to work on his house he's trying to rent out.
I'm usually not one to worry or panic or even check the news, yet I've found myself doing that all the time now.
It's been very surreal. -
What is the general rule/idea around meetings outside of your work hours?
It has happened several times that I wasn't able to join some meetings that were outside of my work hours. I try to join but some thing or the other comes up and then I miss it. I make sure to join any meeting that's highly important or if it's about anything related to my work (or if I'm required to attend).
I work with people in different time zones and there was a meeting set after 8:30pm my time, and I wasn't able to join. My coworker messaged me, in a passive aggressive way (seemingly), asking if he needs to remind me before every meeting in my calendar so that I would join.
I feel like I'm not being paid enough for the work that I do, and I work around 8-9 hours (sometimes 10 and I don't get paid for overtime).
On top of that, am I obligated to attend every meeting and not have anything planned or unplanned to do after work hours? (I don't think I should have any obligation)
I don't have previous experience of working with international teams/clients before, so I'm not sure what I should do here.9 -
archeological work is painful and difficult
people in industry don't seem to emphasize/warn how much archeological work there is in being a code monkey
or are there jobs that don't involve it? i imagine the skill remains essential
greenfield work to be the exception not the norm, and start up life is hell and a gamble
interview process seems to completely disregard this, as i imagine it'd be difficult to assess, unlike leetcoding linked lists or code golfing stuff without using data structures, or whatever awful things they ask for in leetcode hards or whatever3 -
I like investigating hypothetical and unlikely future scenarios, so here it goes:
Let's say you are studying CS(BSc.) and you got an offer at google(or another FAANG company). Would you drop out to work for them? Why/why not?7 -
If I work at home this weekend to get some undersized stuff done by monday . Should I ask them to pay me extra?
Or we devs do not have those privileges?1 -
What is a good way of enforcing rules (particularly following release procedures, cut off dates) for a team?
Other than the rules need to be well defined and written down, I'm thinking there needs to be a consequence for violations....
Like must provide a valid explanation or buy the boss/team/whoever has to do extra work because of the violation a drink.
But not sure what's a good one, does it work out is this too Draconian?9 -
Today, I came across a real problem.
Real.
A friend of mine asked me how could she could compile and rum programs. I just gave her Linux to install, which she just couldn't.
Then I gave her codeblocks and dev c++, which she couldn't work on, due to some error.
thereafter I just to make sure, installed turboc and mingw, and made it work. but unfortunately still, she couldn't make it work when she went home.
Now, either her laptop is piece of pure shit, or I'm not just the right guy fit for technical support. -
How do you decide on what languages and/or frameworks to use in personal projects?
My uni work is done for the summer on Friday and I want to start working on a couple of side projects.
I use c# at work, and this year I’ve been doing Java and next year I’ll be doing python with uni.
There’s a handful of languages I’d like to work with, but I know that I’ll get the best out of picking one language and digging into it, but I’m not sure how to pick the right one.1 -
They put me on a new project, asks me if I want to work with A and B technology, tell them I am not interested. Then partner talks me back feeling like he is pushing me. Tell them I still do not want to work with it and they need to find C technology which I have been very clear that I want to specialize in. I know they have lots of projects with C technology but they are doing things difficult for me. Do not want to be like a kid but I need to think about my future. Maybe I should suck it up or tell them goodbye and move on, anyone in similar situation?

Finding myself with more and more time where I'm not engaged in conversation or listening to an actual person. What are the best dev-related podcasts to listen to whilst I work/code?1

Getting to mess and tinker with the latest tech before it even hits the market, easy to find a job that pays well, and of course getting to pretty much dress as casual as you want ( or not at all if you work from home !)

Is a calendar view that starts on a Monday column a bad or unusual UX? I'm used to seeing Sunday on the leftmost and Saturday on the rightmost. I'm not sure about other cultures. It's one of my tasks at work. Thank you.12

I'm not a fan of reinventing the wheel but I have this new found motivation to learn everything related to tech , science and math from scratch. I'm talking new models and so on . It's probably not going to work like most of my other ideas but it's worth giving it a shot . For now I guess I will setup a new YouTube channel or something and log the progress and the development .
That said I'm not sure where i should start first but I do know I want to cover everything from programming and quantum scripting to rocket science . Work our way up slowly ofcourse ... -

I have realized that I need to redefine the meaning of the word "work" in my brain to mean "anything that needs to be done regardless of whether it's fun/interesting/engaging or not".
I should have realized and done that a long time ago.1 -
so i got offers to work as game developer,i think they are not a company but small indie dev and want me to join their team, the work is remote and they are using revenue share to pay me,my question is how to avoid or sue them if they gonna scam me,like when the project is done and they just dissappears, they give doc to sign and inside all is all abour privacy policy, work details and my signature9

Help please!
Despite having good speed, any website/app on my phone (other than Google, Youtube, Gmail, Instagram etc..) are either not opening or loading very slow.
Due to this I can't get my work done because I use my phone's internet to work on laptop.
Can't find any solution online because most people are giving solution for desktop and wifi router.
This happened after I changed my ISP. Previous ISP was working fine and now I'm regretting it.5 -
It's does not take a huge amount of knowledge and skill to get a program working.Kids in high school do it all the time. young men and women in college start billion-dollar business based on scrabbling together a few lines of PHP or Ruby. Hoards of junior programmers in cube farms around the world slog through massive requirements documents held in huge issue tracking systems to get their systems to "work" by the sheer force of will. The code they produce may not be pretty; but it works. It works because getting something to work-once-just is not that hard.

"InvalidStateError: An attempt was made to use an object that is not, or is no longer, usable"
I really hate you fucking InvalidStateError, I hate you will all my heart. How can I debug this fucking hell of error? form.setFieldsValue(mydamnvalue) should just work so I can be happy and advance the work on this app, fuck!!4
